Welcome To My Blog... "The Blog Of The Wildebeest"

Hi All,

I'll explain the "wildebeest" thing at a later time. Right now... on with the questions we're to answer in our initial blog.

Given my Myers-Briggs personality type (INTP), I believe knowledge, information and education are key to financial success and personal fulfillment. Currently I am enrolled at COTC primarily just for the sake of learning new things. I initially just wanted to learn how to build better websites. After meeting with an adviser at the Coshocton Campus, I began to explore the possibility of pursuing a Digital Media Design degree. Many of my Ohio State credits transferred to COTC. In my third quarter, I am now beginning some of the classes in which I am especially interested.

As a non-traditional student, I was concerned about juggling school with my career, family and other responsibilities. Although my schedule is rather tight, I'm pulling it off so far, and enjoying the experience. I'm looking forward to some of the "meatier" classes like web design and digital photography. Ultimately, I'd like to use my DMD education as part of a side business at home.

  1. I was 32 when I started back to school. I understand completely about the tight schedule. Between work, classes and my family I have to schedule in a few minutes every now and then for me so I don't get burnt out. I'm also a "webbie" and graduate in the Spring...then it's off to Franklin for my bachelor's degree.

  2. Hey Mike,

I am always happy to read about non-traditional students because I am one. I had to Google Myers-Briggs and the personality type INTP. Very interesting.

If I understand the INTP profile correctly, as you said, you are taking these classes to compliment the big picture. Designing the empire so to speak. Good for you! Adding college courses to an already established life and schedule is hard.

You said you were in your third quarter and blankenfurter (hey blankenfurter) said he is graduating in the spring (congrats blaken…….!). My plan of study for Web Design has this class in quarter 1 (?). Did you save this class for later or was it in your plan of study for third quarter? Regardless, knowledge is power and never goes to waste. Best of luck to you.

  3. Hello,

While reading your post I could think of how much I can relate to what you just said. Trying to juggle school with responsibilities can be rough, but when you are determined there is nothing to stand in your way.

I tend to feel that the time I have spent in college has taught me many things, but in other ways I feel I have wasted some of my time. Being young and searching for the right career can turn into a long haul, especially when you are wanting to fulfill your dream before responsibility weighs you down. Funny things is, even though I am still searching for my career, I still keep attending school.

    Good thoughts Mike!

  4. Erica,

Thank you for your post. I'm not sure how old you are, but it sure sounds like you have your head on straight and are taking a hard look at your education and what it means to you. I think that asking high school seniors, or even 20 or 21-year-old what they want to do for an entire career is asking quite a bit. Some people know right away. Others take years to find their passion. I think it's great that you're being honest with yourself (and presumably others) that you're not yet quite sure what you want to do.

  5. Mike I am going back for my graduate studies at 53 and I know the challenges. You are to be commended for your drive. Keep it up.

  6. I originally started in the Graphic Design option and changed over a couple of quarters ago. My wife, sister in law and brother in law just graduated from the program and are all graphic designers. I figured we needed at least on web specialist in the mix.
I started college back in '94 right after I graduated and majored in Law Enforcement (fell at work over a summer and tore cartilage in my knee, ended the law enforcement thing). Computers have always been my passion and until I moved here I didn't have the opportunity to study anything like DMD.
